Northern Iceland 2024, lots of snow and lots of fun - my foto workshop 2024

Iceland is a great place for photography!

Iceland however is not an insider tip any longer, neither for tourists nor for photographers. Iceland is well known, well travelled and still a must see for many people especially photographers. It is a fascinating place, but also a victim of its success in tourism, in parts it is already overtourism. At least in my opinion. Is it still worth while going there, definitly, but the days are gone, where you are alone at the major attractions.

This years workshop took place during September and focused only on some locations in the north of iceland, especially the highlands where 4x4 vehicles are mandatory. Therefore the number of visitors is smaller especially during autumn, which is already after season. There are risks and opportunities visiting the highlands during fall. There maybe snowstorms blocking the tracks, but you may have northern lights and snow covered mountain peaks!

This workshop was also the opposite of a round trip. Our accomodations where located close to the major attractions to be able to visit during early morning or evening, the distance between our hotels was sometimes not even 100km and we stayed often 3 nights in one place. Everything was tailored for flexibility to be able to adopt to weather and (over)tourism.

And it payed off!

Snow was our companion during this trip! It is quite normal to get a snowstrom during September. But we had several days, where it snowed even in the lower altitudes including a severe snowstorm! Lots of tracks I planned to drive where closed or impassable and we had to plan every day according to weather and snow cover of the roads and tracks. Even the ring road was closed once and we just made it back to our hotel before everything came to a standstill. It was a tricky drive!

The itinerary is explained in a few words. Start in Reykjavik, drive north, if possible on the Kjölur, stay in Akureyri, stay close to Godafoss, stay close to Askja and the north-eastern highlands, stay close to Dettifoss and then drive back to Reykjavik. Some tourists do this in three days, we had two weeks!

The workshop was about landscape photography with a focus on waterfalls and the rugged and desolate highlands in the North. To capture the essence of the barren vulcanic highlands is a much more demanding task than to take the must have pictures of the iconic locations like Godafoss. Composition is tricky, finding good locations is even more difficult. We tried to strike a balance between the iconic places and locations good for capturing the atmosphere of the highlands on a given day.

The snowfall did not make this task easier, as nearly all 4x4 tracks I had planned had been impossible to drive. But we found always interesting tracks or roads to search for the locations in the middle of nowhere. The harsh weather with temperatures often close to freezing and nearly always frost during the night added some atmosphere, but it felt more like winter. It was a cold and snowy September!

The weather may have been cold and snowy, but we did not have a single long strech of nasty weather where we could not go out to take fotos and that is a bit unusual as well. Whatever weather we had we went out as soon as the forecast showed signs of improvement. Even during and after the heavy snowstorm which brough life to a standstill we had been lucky. The polar foxes dug themselvs out of the knee-deep snow....

Lets show some fotos of the different types of landscapes we have visited!

Geothermal areas

Geothermal areas are always a part of my workshops, I try to visit at least one, this year we managed to visit two and a geothermal power station. The cold had the advantage, that the steam is much better visible, no complex postprocessing necessary.....

The waterfalls

Iceland boasts many famous waterfalls. We had three visits to Dettifoss (and some failed attemps due to snow and ice), spent three nights right at Godafoss (inlcuding one night with northern lights) and spent some time at some not so well known waterfalls at the coast and in the highlands. Waterfall photography is a nice contrast to the desert like highlands!

And I nearly forgot the short stay at Gullfoss!

A very special waterfall, which I like a lot is not a waterfall any longer and we managed to visit it twice, the Asbyrgi area. Asbyrgi was once a huge waterfall before the river Jökulsa decided to dig a new canyon to the sea! I love Asbyrgi expecially when the foilage of the forests is colorful!

The Tröllaskagi mountains north of Akureyri

No area close to the ring road is off the beaten track in Iceland. A bit less overrun are the Tröllaskagi Mountains and the peninsula with the same name. The landscape is not typical icelandic, no vulcanos, no geothermal areas, no glaciers, no lava flows, but lush meadows and farms in mountain valleys. The character is more alpine with a vulcanic touch due to the horizontal layers of basaltic rocks.

I spent some very pivotal weeks of my life in the Skidadalur in the Tröllaskagi, therefore it is the area in Iceland which means most to me. When I was a student of physical geography I was asked to participate in an expedition to Iceland to do research on periglacial landforms. The team spent four weeks in a shepherds hut to do research. But it was the beginning and the end of my academic career! In terms of scientific results the expedition was a desaster and I decided that I may be better off in the industry. The head of the expedition was clueless, even at the end of the expedition I had not the feeling that we produced any meaningful results.... I never regretted the decision, but I am still a geographer deep down in my heart! Coming back to Tröllaskagí is very special......

Despite of the snow, we managed to visit many valleys and crossed the mountains on a 4x4 track. We had a good time on the peninsula. Only the western slope of the mountains towards Holar was out of reach. Anyway I will try next time.

No visit to Iceland without spending time with the lovable Icelandic Horses, for me it is a must and a unique photographic opportunity. The highlands itself are not good for horses, but the Tröllaskagi is!

The northern and northeastern highlands

We crossed the highlands on the Kjölur, but I planned for much more. But the snow made it impossible to visit places like Askja, Herdubreid, Bardarbunga or Kverkfjöll. That was and is a big pity. However we managed to drive Sprengisandur up to the snowline, just before heavy snowfall blocked this route completely as well. The northern part of Sprengisandur is the big emptiness and a big challenge to capture the atmosphere!

Taking the heavy snow into account, we can be very happy with what we have achieved. One mountain pass, which opened up the more eastern highlands was just! passable and we had our access to another emptiness. As soon as there was a risk of snowfall I avoided it, I did not want to be marooned on the other side. On the day of the big snowstrom I decided against using this mountain pass, which was probably the best decision of the trip.....

On that day we hardly made it back using the ring road, strong winds, blowing snow, the road was really really slippery! Shortly after we made it back to the hotel in walking pace (next pic, but it kept on snowing for the next 8 hours!), the ring road was blocked and subsequently closed. All vehicles on the road had to be evacuated in a convoy supervised by the emergency organisations. They did a good job.

By the way spikes are in September not yet allowed on rental cars, with spikes it would have been a bit tricky but much easier!

Back to some pictures from the different parts of the highlands we visited!

Northern Lights

Yes I miss a bit the locations we could not visit, but we can be more than happy with what we could get!

Right now we are in a really good phase to watch the spectacle of aurora and the web is full of pictures from places even down south as far as Switzerland or Hungary. I have seen a picture from the Falklands with Southern Lights the day before yesterday, amazing! If you want to watch it, do it now or during the next two or three years. It will not be better but worse for the next 10 years! You still can join our workshops in Greenland and Iceland in the upcoming years!

We had really good northern lights in very interesting locations! Iceland is in a perfect geographic position, but wind and clouds can spoil everything and Iceland is a cloudy and windy spot!

We did see aurora over Godafoss and twice in the highlands, not a bad harvest!

What else did we not visit - museums! I planned for two very photogenic museums, full of history and foto opportunities, Laufas and the Herring Museum in Siglufjördur. But I could not convince the group..... But at least we had a good stop in Siglufjördur, but no museums this time!

I guess that's all for the moment. At the end I will share some more pictures from Myvatn, and other areas we visited during our exciting two weeks in Iceland. Right now we are planning our workshop program for the next years and we will probably offer this trip again. Check out the german text right after the next section, we will attend the travel fairs in Lünen, Vienna and Erlangen during October/November, everybody is welcome.....

Many thanks to the group for their flexibility and their good mood despite the constant changes, but thats Iceland and part of the fun!
